Remote Redundant RAID
The safest and highest available form of RAID redundancy is the mirror. Different from typical
replication solutions, a failure f one complete side does not even result in a small interruption
of the system – all data remain available without interruption. In the best configuration the mirror
spreads over two locations, e.g. different IT centers. Two independent RAID systems with SAS and/or
SATA disk drives in a RAID 6 are then mirrored on a dual controller head, which results in a RAID 61
configuration. The mirrored volumes are then offered to the servers – ideally over redundant paths/switches.
In this scenario even multiple failure will not result in loss of date availability, e.g. if a complete
RAID fails together with 2 disks on the other side, a controller in the head and one switch.
But what if a complete location fails (maybe because of fire)? If it is the side without the head,
data are still available. If on the other hand the side with the head fails, data are still there
but cannot be accessed immediately. But then a direct connection of the local RAID to the servers
can be activated on the switch (alternative path), and within seconds data are available again.
